In our last post, we covered the first parts of setting up a competition on Throwdowns.com, including the logistics and the divisions that you’ll want to include. Today, we’re going to cover the next phase — what workouts each division will be performing. I know it. You know it. The whole world knows it: content is king. In the context of CrossFit at your local box, content is essentially the programming, and competitions are no different. You come the first time for the camaraderie and fun. You come back because the programming was creative and challenged you to push your limits.
When you register for a comp, the first thing you ask your workout pal — or they ask you — is what division you’re going to be in. Knowing that, we make it easy for your athletes to choose the division that’s most relevant to them. While we understand that divisions determine the segments your registrants fall into, the goal of your programming is that your workouts provide the same stimulus to all participants, regardless of division. As a result, workouts are configured once for the entire competition. In other words, if you have 4 divisions for athletes, you will not need to set up each workout 4 times. You’ll only set each workout up once. Just be sure you’ve included the relevant information for all divisions so everyone understands what’s expected of them.

Once your workout parameters are set up, you’ll notice that the next step is to determine the scoring model you’ll want to use. But don’t fret – it only takes about 30 seconds! Scoring for workouts can be set up using one of several common policies. A scoring policy is typically setup to span the entire competition, but you can override it for divisions if you ever have more advanced needs for your situation.
For example, a placement-based scoring policy configured at the level of the competition would means that all workouts would be scored like the Open where first place equals 1 point, second place equals two points, etc. Using the placement-based scoring policy, your athletes are vying for the lowest cumulative score, However, the number of points available remains constant across all workouts for the competition.
Another common option is a points table scoring policy. With a points table, you can assign varying numbers of points that can reward athletes “on a curve.” If you’ve ever watched the Games, you’ll have noticed that the number of points available in each workout varies in such a way that consistently higher performers receive a disproportionate number of points compared to competitors who have more variance across all of their efforts. You can configure points tables or use the industry-standard pre-populated defaults. Either way, the key takeaway is that points tables are usually configured to reward consistency.
Once set, each workout can be configured independently to prioritize lower scores (time-based workouts), higher scores (AMRAPs, max effort lifts for weight, etc.), tiebreakers, and a few other common options. There are a lot of knobs you can turn, but we’ve set you up with solid defaults, and it’s easy to make a few tweaks where you feel that it’s necessary.
As part of configuring all the workouts for your competition, you can also control when the workout details become visible to your registrants. The video below illustrates how you could setup your workouts in advance, but configure a date and time trigger so that the platform reveals one workout per week to maintain a suspense level with your participants.
In the event that you are running an online qualifier or an entirely online competition, there is one other setting you’ll want to consider: when to open and close scoring windows. After releasing the WOD, you’ll need to set up the window when each workout can be completed. As you might expect, you can configure this on a workout by workout basis since the specific dates and times will vary for each workout.
In the example below, we’ve illustrated how to permit submissions from the time the WOD was released through the following Saturday night at 8PM. We’ve done that for each of the 3 WODs in this competition in a staggered manner. Once you’ve planned and completed the configuration, the platform takes care of the rest.
