Matthew Russell started regularly training with James Hurlburt in late 2013, shortly after James completed his CrossFit Level-1 Trainer and opened the doors of CrossFit Cool Springs. The following summer, James sponsored a charity competition called “Battle for the Box” to benefit orphans in Haiti and realized late in the planning cycle that he didn’t have a scoring system, so he turned to Matthew for help.
Unsatisfied with the “easy answer” of presenting the community with a spreadsheet as a scoring system, Matthew scratched his itch for a meaningful weekend project by creating a custom scoring app that powered mobile-friendly leaderboards for the competition. It was a hit, and in the months ahead, Matthew responded to the numerous requests he had been receiving to use the scoring system by evolving it into a more robust application that soon became known as Throwdowns.com.
Since powering its first competition in 2014, Throwdowns has evolved into the most powerful competition management platform available.
We’re a team of like-minded competitive athletes on a mission to serve the competition community by helping athletes connect, train, and compete.
Matthew is a technology entrepreneur whose career spans active duty military service, stints in defense contracting, and leadership building complex software products to improve cancer treatment and help law enforcement shut down human trafficking rings. Matthew originally created Throwdowns to help run a charity competition to benefit children in Haiti. Throwdowns has since grown into a global business powering fitness competitions around the world. Matthew is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and is grateful for the opportunity to lead an amazing team that’s on a mission to help athletes connect, train, and compete!
James has been a fitness enthusiast all his life. Growing up in rural Alaska, exercise was always a way to fight off cabin fever, and provide entertainment indoors during the -45 degree winters. He was first exposed to the idea of functional training when a CrossFit instructor came to the sports facility at Boise State University, where James played Linebacker as a part of the well-known Tostitos Fiesta Bowl championship team. James went on to aid in developing a fitness apparel brand for 5 years before leaving to start CrossFit Cool Springs. Before joining the team, James ran his CrossFit box for 6 years. He brings a history of business development, combined with industry knowledge gained through CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, and a USAW certification. As someone who has run several competitions, James understands the pain points associated with organizing fitness events and aims to provide the absolute best customer experience possible.
